In a statement, the CMP thanked Kazakhstan for its contribution, which was transferred on June 12. The committee said the donation would support its 2026 work aimed at identifying missing persons and returning their remains to relatives, helping bring closure to families affected by decades of uncertainty.

The CMP recalled that it was established under United Nations auspices in April 1981 following an agreement between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides and calls in two UN General Assembly resolutions for the creation of such a mechanism.

1,069 Missing Persons Identified

The CMP noted that its exhumation, identification and return programme became fully operational in 2006, with the European Union remaining its main financial supporter.

According to the committee, a total of 1,069 missing Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot persons have so far been identified and returned to their families for burial.

The CMP also stressed that continued donor support remains essential for sustaining the bicommunal project.
