Tsipras, leader of the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), said that the Greek Cypriot administration and Greece should act in close coordination in response to geopolitical developments, adding: “Cyprus must be supported in order to defend its sovereign rights derived from international law.”

He arrived in Cyprus to attend a conference organised in cooperation between the Alexis Tsipras Institute and the Prometheus Research Institute, as well as to hold a series of meetings.

According to Haravgi, Tsipras first met AKEL Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou, and later held talks with President Nikos Christodoulides.

During the meeting with Stefanou, discussions reportedly included efforts to resume Cyprus settlement talks from where they left off in 2017, with emphasis placed on the importance of political will from both leaders.

The exchange also covered developments in Cyprus and Greece, as well as the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean. Tsipras congratulated AKEL on its election result, highlighting its importance for strengthening what he described as the “struggle for justice of Cyprus and its people.”

He later met Christodoulides.

Following the meeting, Tsipras said Greece and Cyprus must maintain close coordination in the face of modern geopolitical challenges, adding that such coordination was more than a necessity in the current period of geopolitical crises.

He reiterated that Cyprus must be supported to defend its sovereign rights under international law, describing Greece and Cyprus as a “force for peace and stability” in the region.

Tsipras also said international law remains the only viable tool to defend the vital interests of both countries against what he described as “power politics and imposition.”

Referring to developments in the Middle East, he said international law was the only means to protect vital interests and oppose those seeking to impose force, adding that “this strange, irrational and unnecessary war must end.”

On the Cyprus issue, Tsipras said he agrees that efforts should be made to resume negotiations from where they left off, on the basis of the Guterres Framework.
