Anastasiadis Probe Enters New Phase
A new phase has been reached in the investigation linked to allegations of corruption contained in journalist and author Makarios Drousiotis’ book “Mafia State”, it has been reported, with legal experts saying that former Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiadis no longer enjoys constitutional immunity and could face criminal proceedings if sufficient evidence is found.
The allegations concern claims made in Drousiotis’ book against Anastasiadis, and the related investigation is now reportedly advancing into a more decisive stage.
According to the newspaper Politis, legal expert Christoforos Christofi said that Anastasiadis is no longer protected by presidential immunity and that there is no longer any constitutional barrier preventing a criminal investigation following his departure from office.
He added that, provided sufficient evidence exists, there would be no legal obstacle to launching a criminal inquiry, and that findings and reports prepared by the Independent Authority Against Corruption would not automatically bind the Legal Service, which acts as the prosecuting authority.
Under the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus, the president and vice president cannot be subject to criminal prosecution while in office, except in extraordinary cases such as high treason or serious moral offences, and only through specific judicial and parliamentary procedures.
Meanwhile, Alithia reported that Anastasiadis announced he will hold a press conference on the issue on 23 June.
