EU Signals Need For Cooperation With Turkey, Says Kallas
The European Union has sent a notable message to Greece regarding Turkey’s potential involvement in EU defence initiatives, with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stressing the importance of cooperation with Turkey, particularly in the security and defence sector.
Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said in an interview with the Greek newspaper Ta Nea that the EU needs to work closely with Turkey in key strategic areas.
Her remarks come amid Greek concerns over Turkey’s possible participation in the EU’s €150 billion SAFE defence programme, which Athens has reportedly sought to block.
“We Need Cooperation With Turkey”
Kallas said: “We propose cooperation with Turkey as much as possible. In defence, because Turkey is not part of SAFE, member states are already working toward closer cooperation with Turkey, as most of them are in NATO together and Turkey plays an important role there.”
She added that Turkey remains an important part of the European security architecture and emphasized that cooperation is necessary, particularly in defence policy.
Response To Security Concerns
Responding to a question framed by the newspaper suggesting that Turkey threatens two EU member states, Kallas reiterated that Europe needs cooperation with Turkey, especially in defence, underlining its strategic role within NATO and broader regional security dynamics.
