Politis: Second 5+1 Meeting Could Be Held In November If First Meeting Fails
The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguín, is expected to carry out further consultations in Athens, Ankara and Nicosia ahead of the planned 5+1 format meeting on the Cyprus issue. The Politis newspaper reported that if the meeting scheduled for late July or early August fails to produce results, a second 5+1 meeting could be placed on the agenda for November.
Holguín, who is currently in New York for consultations, is expected to return within around ten days for another round of discussions in the Athens–Ankara–Nicosia triangle.
In its report titled “A Second Five-Party Meeting Also on the Horizon,” the newspaper said Holguín will carry out further consultations aimed at finalising the conditions for the 5+1 process, while continuing efforts to bring the sides closer to a common understanding.
According to the report, the first 5+1 meeting is expected to take place in late July or early August, while diplomatic sources do not rule out the possibility of a second meeting in November, depending on developments.
Holguín is said to be aiming for an agreed framework document that could serve as a basis for a broader strategic understanding among the parties.
The report noted that, given the current state of discussions, the outcome of the July–August meeting will be crucial in determining whether a strategic agreement can be reached before the end of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s term, or whether a further 5+1 meeting will be required under a new UN leadership.
It added that establishing a clear timeline has become necessary and is understood by all parties involved, while Holguín is expected to shape the process based on the positions and expectations of the sides.
The newspaper reiterated that if the upcoming 5+1 meeting does not lead to a strategic breakthrough, a second 5+1 meeting in November remains a likely scenario.
