Dimitriu: Sides Not Aligned On Cyprus Issue
Speaker of the Greek Cypriot House of Representatives Annita Dimitriu has said that the Greek Cypriot side, the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey are not aligned on the Cyprus issue.
According to Alithia, Dimitriu made the remarks in response to comments by Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman on social media.
Dimitriu said she could not comment on Erhürman’s statements, but added that she was aware of what was discussed at the National Council and the outcome of her personal contacts.
She said that anyone genuinely interested in a solution should examine how they are contributing to or supporting the process.
Dimitriu noted that there is currently diplomatic movement on the Cyprus issue, which she described as a step closer to the objective.
She added that, based on statements made so far by the parties, it is clear that the Greek Cypriot side, the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey are not on the same position.
Dimitriu said that the agreed elements, the framework, the negotiation basis and what is being discussed are already on the table, adding that they know how to move forward and that their efforts are focused in that direction.
She also said that not everything depends on them, stressing that the Cyprus issue should never be approached unilaterally.
Dimitriu added that developments in the region are having an impact and that correct diplomatic and political steps must be taken.
