Üstel: No Solution In Cyprus Is Possible With Old Patterns
Ünal Üstel has said that lasting peace in the Eastern Mediterranean can only be achieved on the basis of sovereign equality, adding that “no solution in Cyprus is possible with old patterns.”
Speaking at the Mediterranean Peace and Diplomacy Forum, Üstel underlined the importance of peace, stability and diplomacy in the Eastern Mediterranean, stressing the strategic position of Northern Cyprus.
He said the island reflects the reality of two separate peoples, two separate democracies and two separate states, arguing that any approach ignoring this reality cannot produce a lasting and sustainable settlement.
Üstel reiterated that the policy of sovereign equality and equal international status, pursued in full coordination with Turkey, is not a political preference but a prerequisite for a durable solution.
He said the Turkish Cypriot side supports dialogue, negotiation and diplomacy, but insists that these must be conducted on an equal footing.
“Peace can only be built on justice, and justice begins with recognising equality,” he said.
Üstel argued that the Turkish Cypriot side has long faced unjust isolation despite being part of the international community, but has never rejected dialogue or compromise.
He added that the Eastern Mediterranean is now a centre of energy routes, trade corridors and global geopolitics, and that stability in the region serves everyone’s interests.
Criticising Greek Cypriot policies, Üstel said actions that increase militarisation and tension in the region do not serve Cyprus or the Eastern Mediterranean, adding that security can only be achieved through dialogue and balanced policies based on international law.
He said no actor should assume that regional balances can be changed unilaterally, and reiterated that the Turkish Cypriot side will continue to defend its rights in full cooperation with Turkey.
Üstel also said the Turkish Cypriot administration is a functioning state with its own institutions, flag and democracy, adding: “We exist, we are here, and we will continue to exist forever.”
He pointed to ongoing developments in areas such as economy, education, infrastructure and digital transformation, saying Northern Cyprus is a growing and developing state.
Üstel concluded by thanking Bahçeşehir Cyprus University and other contributors to the forum, expressing hope that it would contribute to peace, stability and new cooperation opportunities in the Eastern Mediterranean.
