Fidan: Greek Cypriot Blockage Is Delaying the Modernisation of the Customs Union
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said there is strong political will on both sides to modernise the Customs Union between Turkey and the European Union, but the process is not moving at the desired pace because of a blockage by the Greek Cypriot administration.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Ceenbek Kulubayev, Fidan said both Turkey and the European Union are eager to update the Customs Union framework.
"The Greek Cypriot side has imposed a certain blockage on this issue, which is preventing progress at the desired pace," Fidan said.
He noted that decision-making processes within the European Union can sometimes be delayed because of the positions taken by individual member states, adding that vetoes by a single member country on various issues can complicate progress.
Despite this, Fidan said the vast majority of EU member states support the modernisation of the Customs Union and argued that implementing the update could significantly increase trade volumes.
He noted that trade between Turkey and the European Union currently stands at around $250 billion and has the potential to double or even triple, generating substantial economic benefits for both sides.
