According to reports, dozens of motorists in Southern Cyprus have between five and eight unpaid traffic fines. During the first 20 days of the "photoradar" list's implementation, authorities served 13,000 traffic citations.

According to Fileleftheros, many drivers who received traffic fines also have penalty points on their licences, and 13,000 citations have been delivered since the system was introduced.

The newspaper reported that 160,000 fines issued by speed and traffic cameras in Southern Cyprus had not been delivered to motorists by the company responsible for notifications. However, after the "photoradar" list system was introduced at crossing points between Northern Cyprus and Southern Cyprus and at police stations, 13,000 people were notified of their fines.

According to the report, Greek Cypriot Police Traffic Department Director Haris Evripidu said 13,000 camera-detected traffic violations had been served, while notification of another 160,000 fines remained pending.

Evripidu said implementation of the "photoradar" list began at crossing points between Northern Cyprus and Southern Cyprus and at police stations. He added that checks would soon also be carried out by traffic police using a special device to be provided to officers conducting roadside inspections.

He also urged the public to check the authorised company's website to determine whether they had any outstanding traffic fines.

Asked whether the "photoradar" list would also be implemented at airports, Evripidu said a decision had been taken not to subject Cypriots to traffic fine checks because Cyprus is expected to join the Schengen Area. He added that once Cyprus enters Schengen, checks will be carried out by airlines.
