Guterres Urges Cyprus Leaders to Seize Opportunity for Progress

According to Fileleftheros and other Greek Cypriot newspapers, Guterres made the appeal in his latest Good Offices Report, stressing that the current "window of opportunity" should not be missed.

In the report, Guterres welcomed the increased dialogue between the two leaders, while emphasizing that the opportunity should not be overlooked.

He called on both sides to approach the process with an open mind, flexibility and a willingness to compromise, stressing that meaningful progress will require political will and commitment from all parties.

While describing the intensified dialogue as encouraging, Guterres warned that the continued failure to implement many of the agreed Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs), as well as the absence of substantive negotiations, could undermine efforts to achieve a lasting settlement.

He said the increased engagement between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders reflects an intention to build trust and advance the Cyprus issue.

Guterres also welcomed the agreement to establish an advisory committee on civil society participation in the peace process, describing it as an important step toward ensuring that the public remains informed and actively involved.

At the same time, the report notes that many of the Confidence-Building Measures agreed in March and July 2025 have yet to be implemented, including the opening of new crossing points.

According to Guterres, implementing those measures would improve the daily lives of Cypriots and provide tangible evidence that the two sides possess the political will to move the process forward.
