The appeal came after their meeting with Erdoğan in Ankara on the sidelines of the NATO Summit.

In identical statements posted on social media following the meeting, Costa and von der Leyen described the European Union and Turkey as strategic partners committed to strengthening their relationship.

"The European Union and Turkey are strategic partners, and we are determined to strengthen our relationship. In a more challenging world, our partnership matters more than ever," the two leaders said.

They also highlighted Turkey's role as an important partner in addressing crises in the Middle East and supporting efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

Turning to Cyprus, the two EU leaders pointed to what they described as a renewed opportunity within the U.N.-led process.

"We should also seize the new momentum that has emerged to resolve the Cyprus issue within the framework of the U.N.-led process," they said.

Their statement comes as the United Nations continues a renewed diplomatic effort aimed at creating conditions for the resumption of formal Cyprus settlement negotiations, reaffirming the European Union's support for the U.N.-led process.
