Erdoğan Meets EU Leaders: Membership Mechanisms Should Be Reactivated
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who were in Ankara for the NATO Leaders' Summit, and called for the reactivation of mechanisms related to Turkey's European Union accession process.
According to a statement by the Turkish Presidency's Directorate of Communications, the meeting took place on the sidelines of the 36th NATO Summit in Ankara and focused on Turkey-EU relations as well as regional and global developments.
Erdoğan welcomed the increase in high-level contacts between Turkey and the European Union, stressing that Ankara's expectation is for the EU accession process to be revitalized through the reactivation of the relevant mechanisms and the resumption of necessary meetings.
Highlighting that Turkey has long been an EU candidate country and a member of the Customs Union, Erdoğan said reforms and investments have turned the country into a major manufacturing hub in Europe. He added that the integrated nature of the European and Turkish economies enhances Europe's global competitiveness and said it is natural for Turkey to expect to be included in future EU trade and investment initiatives.
Erdoğan also reiterated Turkey's willingness to contribute to European security, expressing the expectation that NATO allies would act in line with the spirit of alliance solidarity.
The leaders also discussed Turkey's diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war, reducing tensions between the United States and Iran, and halting Israel's military operations in Gaza, Lebanon and elsewhere in the region.
