The Presidency has said that the European Parliament's latest resolution once again demonstrates what it described as the institution's one-sided and biased approach to the Cyprus issue.

In a written statement, the Presidency criticised the resolution adopted by the European Parliament's plenary on 8 July on "the impact of the 1974 intervention on Cypriot women and girls," saying it reflected the Parliament's longstanding partial stance on developments in Cyprus.

The statement noted that the resolution, drafted by a Greek MEP, followed another recent European Parliament decision concerning missing persons, and argued that it further illustrated the institution's lack of impartiality on Cyprus-related matters.

The Presidency said the timing of the resolution—just ahead of the 52nd anniversary of the 20 July Peace and Freedom Day, when efforts to build trust between the two sides and advance a lasting settlement had intensified—made its purpose clear.

It argued that such "provocative initiatives" undermine confidence-building efforts and seriously damage prospects for a negotiated settlement rather than contributing to reconciliation.

"The resolution adopted by the European Parliament, which is the product of an attempt to rewrite history for political purposes through a biased approach, together with the one-sided process followed in its adoption, serves only to damage the Parliament's credibility, reputation and the likelihood that its decisions will be taken seriously," the statement said.
