Turkish Defence Ministry Calls for Removal of CAATSA Sanctions

In a statement issued after the ministry's weekly press briefing at the Ay Yıldız Joint Headquarters, officials said Turkey remained a strong and effective NATO ally that continues to make significant contributions to the Alliance's deterrence and collective security.

"Our expectation remains the removal of the CAATSA sanctions, which are incompatible with the spirit of alliance, as well as all explicit or implicit restrictions imposed on our defence industry," the ministry said.

The ministry added that it welcomed President Trump's comments and reaffirmed Turkey's preference for strengthening mutual trust and solidarity among allies instead of maintaining restrictions.

Responding to questions about Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's opposition to a possible sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, the ministry reiterated that Ankara supports peace and stability in the region and favours resolving disputes through constructive dialogue and good neighbourly relations.

The ministry also said that avoiding rhetoric capable of increasing tensions would contribute positively to bilateral relations, adding: "The Turkish Armed Forces pose no threat to anyone who does not pose a threat to them."
