GC Media: Erhürman and Christodoulides Await Outcome of Holguin's EU Contacts

Greek Cypriot media reported that Turkish Cypriot President Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides are awaiting a briefing from UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus Maria Angela Holguin after she completes her contacts in Brussels, Rome and Cyprus before deciding on the next steps in the Cyprus process.

According to Fileleftheros, the prospect of holding a new expanded conference during the summer has weakened, with both leaders now waiting for Holguin to conclude her diplomatic contacts.

The newspaper reported that Holguin is scheduled to meet European Council President Antonio Costa in Brussels today and has also requested a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. However, it said a meeting between Holguin and von der Leyen had not yet been confirmed.

The report added that von der Leyen is also due to meet Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides in Paris today, noting that the recent contacts Costa and von der Leyen held with Turkey are expected to feature prominently in both meetings.

Meanwhile, Alithia argued that although the European Union's more active involvement has generated some momentum, it has not produced the shift the Greek Cypriot side had hoped for.

The newspaper claimed that the meetings Costa and von der Leyen held with Turkish officials on the sidelines of the NATO summit demonstrated that Ankara's position on Cyprus remains unchanged. It further argued that linking the Cyprus issue to Turkey's European Union accession process alone would not be sufficient to achieve a settlement.
