PM Üstel Urges GC Side To Join Natural Gas And Energy Projects Instead Of Complaining
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has criticised the Greek Cypriot administration's reaction to the "Memorandum of Understanding on the Supply of Natural Gas to the TRNC" signed with Turkey, urging the Greek Cypriot side to cooperate on water, electricity and natural gas projects instead of filing complaints.
Üstel said it was unsurprising that the agreement had disturbed the Greek Cypriot side, criticising its description of the memorandum as "illegal."
"They Say We Don't Exist, But We Never Disappeared"
Arguing that Turkish Cypriots have been subjected to embargoes and isolation for years, Üstel said: "No matter what they do, just because they say we do not exist does not mean we disappeared, and we never will."
He added that the Greek Cypriot leadership would eventually have to acknowledge the presence of the Turkish Cypriot people on the island and the legitimacy of agreements signed by their elected representatives, stressing that the TRNC would continue to conclude international agreements.
"Next Come Natural Gas, Electricity And Fibre Optics"
Recalling that water had already been brought to the island from Turkey under the "Project of the Century," Üstel said natural gas, electricity interconnection and fibre-optic infrastructure projects were next on the agenda.
"Stop Complaining And Benefit From These Opportunities"
Calling for cooperation, Üstel said: "Stop complaining and come and benefit from these opportunities yourselves. Do not keep misleading your people with dreams that will never come true."
He argued that the Greek Cypriot administration faces serious challenges in the fields of water and energy, adding that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready to share resources and cooperate.
Üstel also recalled Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's previous proposal to share water and electricity with the Greek Cypriot side, saying his own call was made in the same spirit and inviting the Greek Cypriot administration to benefit from the planned water and energy projects.
