Üstel Condemns European Parliament's Cyprus Resolution
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has condemned the European Parliament's resolution on Cyprus, saying it distorts historical facts and reflects only the Greek Cypriot narrative. He argued that the European Parliament has "completely lost its impartiality" on the Cyprus issue and called on EU institutions to approach the matter "fairly, objectively and in light of historical realities."
Reacting to the resolution titled "The impact of the 1974 intervention on Cypriot women and girls," adopted on July 8, Üstel described it as a politically motivated document based on falsehoods and one-sided propaganda, lacking both legal and moral credibility.
He said the Turkish Cypriot people would continue their struggle for sovereign equality and a two-state solution with Turkey's support.
"The European Parliament has completely lost its impartiality on the Cyprus issue," Üstel said, accusing the institution of uncritically adopting the Greek Cypriot side's political narrative.
He argued that anyone seeking examples of human rights violations in Cyprus should look not at Turkish Cypriots or the Turkish Armed Forces, but at those responsible for the intercommunal violence between 1963 and 1974, alleging that they excluded Turkish Cypriots from the Republic's institutions, destroyed villages and committed atrocities.
Üstel also maintained that Turkey's 1974 military intervention was a legitimate action carried out under the rights and obligations arising from the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee, adding that it prevented the destruction of the Turkish Cypriot community and brought peace and stability to the island.
"No one will be allowed to slander the Turkish Armed Forces, unfairly target motherland Turkey or discredit the Turkish Cypriot people's legitimate cause," he said.
Concluding his statement, Üstel urged EU institutions to abandon what he described as ideological and partisan approaches and to address the Cyprus issue in a fair and objective manner based on historical facts.
He reiterated that the Turkish Cypriot people would continue pursuing their goal of sovereign equality, equal international status and a two-state solution with Turkey's strong backing.
