EU Commission Appoints Raffaele Fitto As Special Representative For Cyprus
The European Commission has appointed Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto as its Special Representative for Cyprus, tasking him with supporting UN-led efforts to restart negotiations and advance a comprehensive settlement.
According to a statement issued by the European Commission, Fitto will work closely with UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, to support the settlement process under the United Nations framework.
The Commission said the appointment reflects its strong commitment to the reunification of Cyprus, with the objective of achieving a functional and sustainable comprehensive settlement in line with UN Security Council resolutions and the European Union's principles, values and legal framework.
As part of his mandate, Fitto will engage with all relevant parties and stakeholders to help create the conditions for the resumption of negotiations. He is also expected to support confidence-building efforts and contribute to a comprehensive and lasting settlement process.
The Commission noted that Fitto brings extensive experience in European governance, regional cooperation and institutional dialogue, adding that he will reinforce the Commission's efforts to advance progress towards a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue.
