Dânâ: It Is Impossible To Expect The European Union To Be Neutral In Any Future Negotiation Process

Presidential Undersecretary Mehmet Dânâ has said it is unrealistic to expect the European Union to remain neutral in any future Cyprus negotiations, following the appointment of European Commission Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto as the EU's Special Representative for Cyprus.

In a written statement, Dânâ said the European Commission's decision to appoint Fitto as the successor to Johannes Hahn was an internal matter for the EU. However, he argued that because the Greek Cypriot side is an EU member with veto rights, the bloc cannot be regarded as an impartial actor in a future settlement process.

He said the decisions and statements issued by various EU institutions over the years demonstrate what he described as the Union's one-sided approach to the Cyprus issue.

Dânâ added that since taking office, President Tufan Erhürman has stressed the importance of building confidence not only with the Greek Cypriot side but also with the European Union.

"We expect Mr Fitto to contribute to developing relations and dialogue between the European Union and the Turkish Cypriot side on a healthy and equal footing," he said.

Dânâ also referred to a 2004 European Council decision, which reaffirmed the EU's commitment to ending the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community and called on the European Commission to prepare comprehensive proposals to achieve that goal.

He argued that there has been no meaningful progress since then, including on the implementation of the Direct Trade Regulation, which would allow direct trade between the Turkish Cypriot community and the European Union.

According to Dânâ, ensuring that concrete steps are finally taken in this direction would represent the European Union's most significant contribution to efforts aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue.

He reiterated that the Turkish Cypriot side remains committed to reaching a settlement and continues to fully support the efforts of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to revive the peace process.

Dânâ concluded by expressing hope that Fitto's appointment would provide an opportunity to establish a more balanced relationship between the European Union and the Turkish Cypriot side, while helping to restore confidence and encourage practical measures that would benefit both communities on the island.
