Karullas: Greek Cypriot Side Is Not Obstructing Turkey's EU Accession Process
George Karoullas, Chairman of the Greek Cypriot House Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, has claimed that the Greek Cypriot administration is not an obstacle to Turkey's European Union accession process.
According to Alithia newspaper, Karoullas made the remarks during a meeting of the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of EU Member States, where he responded to comments made by the chairman of the Turkish Grand National Assembly's EU Harmonisation Committee.
Karoullas argued that every candidate country's accession process is assessed solely on the basis of its progress in meeting the European Union's membership criteria.
He rejected suggestions that the Greek Cypriot side is blocking Turkey's path towards EU membership, maintaining that the accession process is governed by the Union's established rules and standards.
Karoullas also stressed that the European Union should play a more active role in defending its principles and values throughout the enlargement process.
