Meningitis Alert At Prison: Inmate In Intensive Care
A Russian national being held in prison after arriving in the TRNC as a tourist has been diagnosed with meningitis and admitted to intensive care, prompting health authorities to introduce precautionary measures for inmates and prison staff who came into contact with him.
According to available information, the inmate, identified only as A.S., developed a high fever and severe headache while in custody and was taken to hospital. Following medical examinations, he was diagnosed with meningitis and transferred to the intensive care unit due to the seriousness of his condition.
Because meningitis is an infectious disease that can be life-threatening in some cases, prison authorities immediately implemented extensive precautionary measures.
Health teams began screening inmates housed in C Block, where the prisoner had been staying, along with prison officers who had been in close contact with him. Preventive treatment has also been initiated for those considered at risk.
Prison officials said they are working in coordination with the Health Ministry and medical authorities to minimise the risk of transmission and ensure all necessary health protocols are followed.
A.S. was arrested on the day he entered the TRNC after allegedly causing a disturbance in Kyrenia while under the influence of alcohol. Police also launched legal proceedings after he reportedly refused to provide a breath sample and behaved aggressively.
