Three Separate Traffic Accidents Leave Nine Injured
Nine people, including two children, were injured in three separate traffic accidents that occurred over the past 24 hours on the Nicosia–Famagusta Highway, the Dipkarpaz–Zafer Burnu road and in Gönyeli, according to the Police Press Office. One driver was also arrested for causing a traffic accident while driving under the influence of alcohol.
Lorry And Car Collide At Dörtyol Junction
The first accident occurred at around 12.30pm on July 15 at the Dörtyol junction on the Nicosia–Famagusta Highway.
Police said Peter Drogan, 37, driving vehicle MZH 810, entered the highway from the Dörtyol direction towards Geçitkale without giving way to vehicles travelling on the main road. His vehicle crossed into the path of a lorry, registration TMZ 387, driven by Mehmet Yardımcı, 39, which was travelling towards Famagusta, resulting in a collision.
Drogan and three passengers—Natalie Sharon Wood-Stoddard, 40, Donnie Nick Drogan, 8, and Darcie River Drogan, 5—were taken to Famagusta State Hospital.
The driver and the two children were treated and discharged, while Wood-Stoddard was transferred to Near East University Hospital in Yeni Boğaziçi after doctors diagnosed a fractured left shoulder. She remains under observation.
Multi-Vehicle Collision On Dipkarpaz Road
The second accident occurred at around 5.30pm on the same day between the second and third kilometres of the Dipkarpaz–Zafer Burnu road.
Hasan Yurt, 43, was driving an ATV, registration ZL 638, towards Zafer Burnu when he attempted to overtake a vehicle ahead by moving into the opposite lane. The ATV collided with the front right side of an oncoming saloon car, registration HPK 474, driven by Andreas Elefteriu, 70.
The impact forced Elefteriu's vehicle into the right-hand lane, where it struck the front right side of another saloon car, registration UT 638, driven by Arif İsmailyılzade, 32.
The injured included ATV rider Hasan Yurt, his 15-year-old passenger Mehmet Yurt, Andreas Elefteriu, and passengers Tarana Ismaliyova, 55, and Nadir Ismaliyova, 62, who were travelling in the third vehicle.
All were taken to Famagusta State Hospital.
Doctors found that Mehmet Yurt had suffered a fracture to his left leg, while Tarana Ismaliyova sustained fractures to her right leg and left shoulder. All of the injured remain under medical observation.
Drink-Driver Arrested In Gönyeli
The third accident took place at around 1.00am on July 16 on an unnamed street in Gönyeli.
Police said Gizem Müftüoğlu, 33, was driving vehicle YY 051 with a breath alcohol reading of 89 milligrams when she lost control of the vehicle. The car mounted the pavement before returning to the road and coming to a stop.
No injuries were reported.
Müftüoğlu was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a traffic accident.
Police investigations into all three accidents are continuing.
