Starmer Formally Resigns As UK Prime Minister
Keir Starmer has formally stepped down as UK prime minister, delivering a farewell speech outside 10 Downing Street before handing over power to new Labour leader Andy Burnham.
In his final address as prime minister, Starmer thanked the British public for entrusting him with the role and wished his successor success.
"I led my party out of a historic defeat. Since our victory in 2024, my only goal has been to serve my country as prime minister," Starmer said.
He said Britain had emerged stronger during his time in office, citing efforts to lift children out of poverty and improve the country's international standing.
"I have witnessed the determination of people across our country and their efforts to improve their communities," he said. "We must remember the challenges facing this country and build a Britain where every child can succeed without compromising our values."
Starmer thanked his family, his team and the British people, adding: "I wish my successor, Andy Burnham, every success. Thank you to the British people for giving me this opportunity."
