Stefanou: Gains Achieved In Cyprus Talks Must Be Preserved
AKEL Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou has said the quickest path to a Cyprus settlement is to preserve the progress achieved during previous rounds of negotiations, while reaffirming his party's support for a bizonal, bicommunal federation based on political equality.
Speaking at a memorial ceremony, Stefanou said the outstanding issues in the Cyprus talks remain property, security and guarantees, according to the Greek Cypriot daily Fileleftheros.
He welcomed UN Secretary-General António Guterres' planned visit to the island, saying it demonstrated the UN chief's commitment to efforts aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue.
Stefanou described the prospect of a new informal expanded meeting on Cyprus as a "golden opportunity" to break the current deadlock.
He also said AKEL opposed proposals from various quarters advocating new approaches to the Cyprus issue, arguing that such ideas would undermine existing convergences reached during previous negotiations and move the process further away from a settlement.
"Time is passing, generations are changing, and ending the occupation and reunifying our homeland remain matters of vital importance," Stefanou said.
He reaffirmed that AKEL would continue to support a peaceful settlement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality and without the presence of foreign troops.
