One Tonne of Plastic Waste Cleared From Akdeniz Coast

In a statement shared on social media, SPOT Marine Life said the Akdeniz Special Environmental Protection Area is among the regions most severely affected by plastic pollution. It noted that the coastline, which stretches for several kilometres, is one of the island's most important nesting sites for sea turtles.

The organisation said it has been carrying out regular beach clean-up operations in the area with different teams for years, but stressed that the scale of plastic pollution encountered this summer required broader solidarity.

Following its public appeal, approximately 150 to 200 volunteers representing various institutions, organisations and community groups took part in the clean-up. Thanks to the strong turnout, more than one tonne of plastic waste was removed from just a 500-metre section of the beach.

SPOT Marine Life thanked all volunteers who travelled from Famagusta and other parts of the island to support the initiative and expressed hope that even more people would participate in future environmental clean-up events.

The organisation also thanked the Lapta-Alsancak-Çamlıbel Municipality for its support.

Brothers Team, the North Cyprus Eco-Agro Tourism Federation, Patika, EMU SAGEM, KITREB, the Dağdoğan Hiking Team, Green Hub and Oza Kahve also contributed to the clean-up event.
