Turkey Issues NAVTEX for Cyprus Gas Pipeline Survey
Turkey has issued a NAVTEX notice for seismic surveys in the eastern Mediterranean as part of plans to construct a natural gas pipeline linking Turkey and the TRNC, according to Bloomberg.
The report said the seismic research vessel Oruç Reis will carry out surveys along the proposed pipeline route until August 30.
Preparatory work on the project began following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Turkey and the TRNC on July 10 for the construction of the pipeline system.
Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar previously said the pipeline would be 101 kilometres long, with 97 kilometres offshore and four kilometres on land. The line will run between Anamur in Mersin and Teknecik, east of Kyrenia, and will be designed to operate in both directions.
Bayraktar said the project could eventually enable natural gas produced on the island to be transported to Turkey and onward to Europe.
Mutual NAVTEX notices issued by Turkey and Greece throughout 2020 heightened tensions in the eastern Mediterranean. After Greece declared a NAVTEX area east of Crete, Turkey responded with its own notice, arguing that the designated area overlapped with its continental shelf. Ankara later issued additional NAVTEX notices to facilitate seismic surveys by the Oruç Reis.
