Groups Call for "Federal Solution Now" Demonstration During Guterres Visit
The United Cyprus – Bi-Communal Peace Initiative has called on the public to take part in demonstrations under the slogan "Federal Solution Now" during UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' visit to Cyprus.
In a statement, the initiative said that on Tuesday at 10:30am, a bicommunal delegation representing supporting organisations will welcome the UN Secretary-General at the Home for Cooperation as he crosses into the north, delivering a joint message in support of peace and a comprehensive settlement.
Later the same day, at 6:30pm, simultaneous demonstrations will be held under the slogan "Federal Solution Now" ahead of the dinner Guterres will host for the two leaders. The demonstration in the north will take place at the Kermia (Metehan) crossing point.
The initiative described the UN Secretary-General's engagement as "a bold step aimed at paving the way for peace and the reunification of Cyprus."
It also stressed the importance of civil society on both sides of the island clearly demonstrating its strong support for the resumption of negotiations and for a settlement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality.
The statement concluded with a call for organisations and individuals to join the demonstrations in support of peace and a solution to the Cyprus issue.
