Guterres Arrives in Cyprus Today for Talks With Leaders

Guterres is travelling to the island with a delegation of senior UN officials.

During his visit, which runs until Wednesday, Guterres will meet Erhürman and Christodoulides separately before hosting a trilateral meeting with the two leaders in the UN buffer zone.

He is also scheduled to visit the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) Anthropology Laboratory and meet representatives of civil society organisations.

The UN chief's discussions are expected to focus on advancing confidence-building measures, exploring common ground on the methodology for a possible new negotiation process and assessing whether conditions exist for another expanded 5+1 meeting.

The visit marks the first trip to Cyprus by a serving UN Secretary-General in nearly 16 years. The previous visit was made by then Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2010.

Separate Meetings With Leaders

According to the UN programme, Guterres' official engagements begin on Tuesday.

He is scheduled to meet Christodoulides at 10:00am and Erhürman at 11:45am in separate meetings at their respective offices.

At 12:30pm, Guterres will attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument outside the Ledra Palace Hotel in the UN buffer zone in Nicosia.

He will then visit the CMP Anthropology Laboratory at 2:30pm before meeting civil society representatives at the UN Good Offices Mission headquarters at 5:00pm.

Trilateral Meeting on Wednesday

On Wednesday, Guterres will bring Erhürman and Christodoulides together at the UN Good Offices Mission headquarters in the buffer zone.

The trilateral meeting is scheduled to begin at 10:00am and will be followed by a press conference by the UN Secretary-General.

Guterres is expected to be accompanied by UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and the Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín.

Holguín's Diplomatic Contacts

Ahead of Guterres' visit, Holguín is expected to hold separate meetings with Erhürman and Christodoulides today.

In recent days, she met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, Raffaele Fitto, in Brussels before travelling to Turkey for talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
