Christodoulides Meets Holguín Ahead of Guterres Visit
UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus María Ángela Holguín said António Guterres is visiting Cyprus to encourage the two sides to move forward with negotiations, expressing hope that the visit will produce tangible progress.
Holguín met Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides on Tuesday morning ahead of the UN Secretary-General's arrival on the island.
According to Alpha News, Holguín said after the meeting that preparations were under way for Guterres' visit.
She said the UN Secretary-General's mission is to encourage and facilitate efforts by the leaders and the people of Cyprus to move the negotiation process forward.
"That is exactly why Mr Guterres is coming," she said.
Speaking to reporters, Holguín confirmed that Guterres would arrive in Cyprus later on Tuesday, noting that the visit follows nearly a decade of efforts by the UN Secretary-General on the Cyprus issue.
She also expressed hope that the visit would lead to concrete progress.
Referring to her recent visits to Brussels and Ankara, Holguín said she had held "very good meetings" and discussed all the issues requiring further progress.
According to Sigmalive, Holguín also said she was pleased to welcome the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus later in the day.
