Fitto: EU Wants More Active Role in UN-Led Cyprus Process
EU Special Representative for the Cyprus issue Rafael Fitto said the European Union wants to play a more active role in the UN-led Cyprus process following talks with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides during his first official visit to Cyprus.
Speaking after the meeting, Fitto said the EU was ready to make a stronger contribution to the UN-led efforts aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue.
"I Want to Play an Important Role"
Fitto said his first visit to Cyprus since his appointment reflected the importance he attaches to his new role.
He said his appointment also sent a clear message that the European Union intends to play a meaningful role in the UN-led negotiation process on Cyprus.
"It is very important for us to make a positive contribution to the process. The European Union wants to participate actively in the UN process and play a constructive role," Fitto said.
He added that hearing the views of the parties during his meetings had been highly valuable and announced that he would return to Cyprus in the coming months.
Fitto also said he believes there is an opportunity to achieve significant progress in the Cyprus process in the period ahead.
