Erhürman: Violence Against Women Is a "Loss of Civilization"
President Tufan Erhürman has condemned violence against women following the knife attack at a supermarket in Nicosia, describing it as a "loss of civilization" and calling for comprehensive policies to address all forms of violence.
In a statement posted on social media, Erhürman said the focus should move away from normalizing or sensationalizing violence, as well as from concentrating solely on the identity or motives of perpetrators.
He argued that a broader approach is needed to tackle violence against women in particular and violence in general.
"Rather than normalizing or sensationalizing violence, or focusing on 'who' and 'why' in individual incidents, we need to focus on comprehensive policies that will help eliminate violence against women and all forms of violence," Erhürman said.
He also expressed his sadness over the incident and wished the injured woman a speedy recovery.
