Archbishop Georgios: Greek Cypriot Side Should Make No Further Concessions
Archbishop Georgios, head of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus, has called on the Greek Cypriot side not to make any further concessions in efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, stressing the need to remain committed to fundamental principles.
According to Haravgi, Georgios made the remarks during a memorial ceremony marking the anniversary of the death of former Archbishop Makarios III.
He said Makarios had accepted compromise but "never accepted unconditional surrender," arguing that the same approach should guide the Greek Cypriot side today.
Georgios also criticised the United Nations, saying the organisation and its officials must act in accordance with the UN's own principles and values. He expressed scepticism about attempts to find "middle-ground" solutions, claiming such efforts may not lead to a lasting settlement.
The Archbishop further stressed that any future settlement should ensure the implementation of European Union norms and guarantee equal rights for all Cypriot citizens.
