Tourism Ministry Condemns Beach Pollution: 'Shameful Scenes' Along the Coast
The Deputy Prime Ministry, Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment said volunteer environmental groups continue to encounter the same scenes of pollution during daily beach clean-up operations, warning that tougher penalties for littering are under consideration.
In a statement, the ministry expressed concern over the level of pollution recorded during beach clean-up efforts throughout the summer season, describing the continued lack of environmental responsibility as disappointing.
The ministry said the annual clean-up campaign is carried out by teams of environmentally conscious young volunteers. Five teams have been cleaning beaches in Famagusta, Iskele, Yeni Boğaziçi, Lefke/Gemikonağı and Tatlısu twice a day, every weekday, throughout the summer.
According to the statement, the amount of litter and waste left behind on the beaches continues to create "shameful scenes," highlighting an ongoing lack of environmental awareness and responsibility.
The ministry said the initiative is intended not only to clean the coastline but also to promote environmental awareness among beachgoers. However, it noted that the persistence of littering has prompted a review of sanctions against those who pollute the environment.
It added that the Environmental Protection Department is considering increasing inspections, particularly on beaches, and introducing more deterrent penalties for individuals who damage the environment.
