Dana: Leaders' Meeting to Mark First Step Toward Results-Oriented 5+1 Talks

Presidential Undersecretary and Special Representative Mehmet Dana said the meeting between President Tufan Erhürman and President Nikos Christodoulides on August 26 will serve as the first step in preparations for a results-oriented expanded 5+1 meeting under the roadmap outlined by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Speaking on BRT's Gündem 12 programme, Dana said the Turkish Cypriot side would participate in the process in a sincere, constructive and determined manner, stressing that the goal is "not negotiations for the sake of negotiations, but a process that delivers results."

Dana recalled that Guterres had presented a new roadmap during his recent visit to Cyprus and shared its framework publicly.

"The objective of this roadmap is to ensure that the two leaders on the island enter a serious preparation process and complete certain tasks in order to make a new, but this time results-oriented, expanded 5+1 meeting possible. If this preparation is completed successfully, such a meeting can take place," he said.

August 26 meeting to launch preparation process

Dana said the August 26 leaders' meeting would mark the beginning of that preparation phase.

"Within the framework set out by the Secretary-General, discussions will begin first on confidence-building measures, then on methodology, and finally on a number of substantive issues. This will be the first meeting, and subsequent meetings will continue at a frequency agreed by the two leaders," he said.

He added that the Turkish Cypriot side supports holding the meetings as frequently as possible to ensure meaningful preparations for a new expanded 5+1 meeting.

"We want these meetings to take place as often as possible so that meaningful preparations can be made for a new 5+1 meeting. Our efforts will be directed towards that objective," Dana said.

He also expressed hope that a regular schedule of meetings would be established following the initial session.

"Our goal is a results-oriented process"

Reiterating the Turkish Cypriot side's long-standing position, Dana said its approach had not changed.

"Our approach is not negotiations for the sake of negotiations, nor a 5+1 meeting for the sake of holding a 5+1 meeting. Our objective is a process that produces concrete results. The framework presented by the Secretary-General is consistent with this approach, and we remain committed to advancing it in a constructive manner," he said.

Dana concluded by saying the Turkish Cypriot side would continue contributing constructively to the preparation process, with the aim of creating the necessary atmosphere of trust, achieving progress on methodology, and addressing substantive issues to pave the way for a new, results-oriented expanded 5+1 meeting.
