Kuwait Contributes $50,000 to Committee on Missing Persons
Kuwait has donated $50,000 to the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP), providing support for its 2026 excavation, identification and remains return programme.
In a statement, the CMP said Kuwait's latest contribution, made on July 27 and equivalent to €43,750, brings the country's total financial support since 2014 to €243,750.
The committee thanked the State of Kuwait, noting that the donation will help fund efforts to locate, identify and return the remains of missing persons to their families during 2026.
The CMP said the project aims to end decades of uncertainty for the relatives of missing persons. It also recalled that the committee was established under United Nations auspices in April 1981 following an agreement between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities in response to UN General Assembly resolutions calling for such a mechanism.
1,081 Missing Persons Identified
The committee noted that its programme to recover, identify and return the remains of missing persons has been operating actively since 2006, with the European Union continuing to serve as the project's principal donor.
According to the statement, the remains of 1,081 Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot missing persons have been identified and returned to their families following funeral ceremonies.
The CMP also stressed that continued donor support remains essential to sustain the bicommunal project.
