Elderly Driver Killed in Alleged Drunk-Driving Crash on Kyrenia-Morphou Highway

An 85-year-old man was killed and three others were injured after a car allegedly driven by an intoxicated 21-year-old crossed into the opposite lane on the Kyrenia-Morphou Highway.

The fatal crash occurred on Saturday morning near the Geçitköy bends on the Kyrenia-Çamlıbel Highway.

According to police, Yağmur Açıkgöz (21), who was found to have 167 milligrams of alcohol in her system, was driving a saloon car bearing registration ZZV 648 towards Çamlıbel when she allegedly lost control on a left-hand bend, crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a saloon car bearing registration FJ 868, driven by Turan Obalı (85).

Obalı sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The alleged driver, Açıkgöz, along with two passengers in her vehicle—Yusuf Gürdü (21) and a 17-year-old passenger—were injured in the collision. Following initial treatment at Kyrenia Dr. Akçiçek Hospital, all three were kept under observation.

Police said their investigation into the crash is ongoing.
