Supermarket Stabbing Suspect Remanded for Seven More Days as Victim Remains in Critical Condition

The suspect, identified as M.B.K., appeared again before the Nicosia District Court, where Judge Şevket Gazi granted police's request to extend his detention.

He faces charges of attempted premeditated murder, causing grievous bodily harm, and carrying a knife unlawfully.

Presenting the police investigation, Nicosia Police Deputy Superintendent Ersan Yaran said the suspect met the victim, Kyrgyz national Z.A., in January 2026 and that the two had lived together for a period in Turkey.

According to Yaran, the suspect opposed the victim's decision to work at a nightclub and had hoped to build a future with her. After learning that she had travelled to the TRNC and signed a contract with a nightclub, he arrived on the island on July 30.

Police allege that the suspect persuaded the victim to visit the villa where he was staying in Kyrenia on the night of July 31. She rejected him there and later left with the assistance of her employer.

Yaran said the suspect went to Ercan Airport on August 3 intending to return to Turkey but abandoned his flight after learning the victim was in central Nicosia. Investigators allege he then decided to kill her, purchased a 23-centimetre knife from a shop in Ortaköy, tracked her to a supermarket in Taşkınköy and stabbed her repeatedly in the head, neck, chest and abdomen with the intent to kill.

Police said the suspect then attempted to take his own life by inflicting knife wounds to his throat and other parts of his body after being confronted by members of the public.

He was taken to Dr Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, treated for his injuries and later discharged before first appearing in court.

The victim was rushed to hospital, where she was placed on a ventilator and underwent two operations. Police told the court that, as of Tuesday morning, her condition remained stable but critical.

Yaran also told the court that the suspect had undergone a psychiatric examination at Barış Mental Hospital and would be assessed again. He added that the suspect had voluntarily confessed to the offences.

Police have obtained statements from more than 30 witnesses, seized mobile phones, CCTV footage, the alleged murder weapon and other evidence. Blood samples have been sent to Ankara for DNA analysis, while fingerprint examinations are continuing.

Investigators said they still need to interview 10 witnesses and complete forensic examinations of the mobile phones. Police argued that the suspect could interfere with the investigation if released.

Defence lawyer Aslı Seldağ did not object to the seven-day remand but claimed the suspect had transferred 1.5 million Turkish lira to the victim during their relationship after being subjected to threats and emotional manipulation. She also told the court that her client had previously received psychiatric treatment in Istanbul and required daily medication.

The court ordered that the suspect remain in police custody for a further seven days.
