Üstel: Fidan’s Statements Show That Realities in Cyprus Can No Longer Be Ignored
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has welcomed Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s recent statements on the Cyprus issue, saying Turkey’s firm support for a two-state solution is an important source of confidence and strength for the Turkish Cypriot people.
In a statement, Üstel thanked Fidan for what he described as clear and determined remarks concerning the rights, future and political will of the Turkish Cypriot community.
Üstel highlighted Fidan’s statement that “the essential solution for us is the implementation of a two-state solution” and that “this is the ideal solution” and “where we stand,” saying the remarks sent a strong message that a new page should be opened in the Cyprus issue.
He also welcomed Fidan’s emphasis on the sovereign, equal and independent position of the Turkish Cypriot people.
Commenting on Fidan’s remarks regarding the Greek Cypriot administration, Üstel said they demonstrated how clear Turkey’s position on Cyprus was.
Üstel also endorsed Fidan’s statement that Turkey does not recognise the Greek Cypriot side as a state, arguing that the Turkish Cypriot people’s rights, political will and existence could not be ignored in any effort to achieve a lasting settlement.
“A lasting solution cannot be achieved through an approach that ignores the rights, will and existence of the Turkish Cypriot people,” Üstel said.
He argued that the focus should not be on reviving formulas that had failed in the past, but on developing a new approach that takes into account the current realities on the island.
‘Our priority is to strengthen and develop the TRNC’
Üstel said the government’s responsibility went beyond defending the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people, stressing that strengthening the TRNC, developing the economy, increasing public welfare and securing the state’s place and respect in the international community were among its main priorities.
He said the government was working to strengthen the economy, improve infrastructure and support production and investment, while cooperation with Turkey remained crucial to achieving these objectives.
‘Turkey’s determined stance is a source of confidence’
Üstel described Turkey’s continued defence of the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people on international platforms as “a great source of confidence and strength.”
He said the political will demonstrated by Turkey under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, together with Fidan’s clear messages on the international stage, was highly significant for the future of the Turkish Cypriot people.
Üstel also welcomed Fidan’s assessment that peace and stability on the island had been maintained by the presence of Turkish troops, saying this was important in accurately reflecting Cyprus’ security realities.
He concluded by thanking Fidan for his “determined stance” in support of the Turkish Cypriot people’s cause and the future of the TRNC.
