Oğuz: Parole Board Decisions Should Not Be Discredited for Populism

Interior Minister Dursun Oğuz said 1,433 of the 3,082 people eligible to apply for parole had benefited from the measure. Oğuz said parole decisions were made by the relevant board in accordance with the law and argued that its decisions should not be discredited for populist purposes.

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s “Morning News” programme, hosted by Canan Onurer, Oğuz addressed the Prison Law.

“Claims That the Prison Director Was Given New Powers Are Untrue”

Oğuz said claims that the prison director had been granted new and extraordinary powers were untrue, noting that the same powers had existed in the past.

He said statements aimed at belittling or discrediting state institutions should be avoided, adding that the work of public institutions should not be targeted for populist purposes.

“1,433 of 3,082 Eligible Applicants Benefited from Parole”

Providing figures on parole applications, Oğuz said 3,082 people were eligible to apply for parole and 1,433 had benefited from it.

He said parole decisions were made by the relevant board within the framework of the law, stressing that it was not appropriate to discredit the board’s decisions for populist purposes.

Oğuz Calls for Fair Criticism

Oğuz called for criticism to be made fairly and with due consideration for how public institutions operate.
