Christodoulides: Republic Of Cyprus Is Our Most Important Achievement
Republic of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said protecting and strengthening the status of the Republic of Cyprus remained the country’s foremost priority, as he marked the 66th anniversary of its establishment.
In a message marking the anniversary, Christodoulides described the proclamation of the Republic of Cyprus as “the most important moment in the long history of our country,” attributing its establishment to the long struggle of the Greek Cypriot people and the national liberation and anti-colonial struggle of EOKA.
“The Republic of Cyprus is our most important achievement,” Christodoulides said, stressing the need to respect, protect and continuously strengthen the status of the Republic both domestically and internationally.
He said this should be achieved domestically by strengthening security and the economy, modernising state institutions and implementing policies aimed at continuously improving citizens’ quality of life.
At the international level, Christodoulides said the Republic of Cyprus should strengthen its influence and status and continue to be recognised as a reliable and constructive partner.
“OUR GOAL IS TO END THE TURKISH OCCUPATION AND REUNIFY OUR HOMELAND”
Christodoulides said strengthening the Republic of Cyprus would enable the Greek Cypriot side to pursue more forcefully its long-standing objectives.
“When we are in a stronger position, we will be able to more forcefully pursue the goals we have long sought: freedom, an end to the Turkish occupation and the reunification of our homeland,” he said.
He stressed that these objectives should be achieved through “a functional and sustainable settlement,” which he said would create new prospects, hope and opportunities under conditions of peace and security.
“First and foremost, the Republic of Cyprus,” Christodoulides concluded.
