234 Vehicles Taken Off The Road

Nineteen people were injured in 63 traffic accidents across the country, while 234 vehicles were taken off the road.

According to the weekly traffic report released by the Police Press Office, the accidents occurred between August 10 and 16. The causes were speeding in 23 cases, careless driving in nine, failing to stop at intersections in 11, following too closely in 12 and other factors in eight cases.

The accidents caused property damage estimated at TL 2,256,600.

By district, 17 accidents occurred in Nicosia, 14 in Famagusta, 12 in Kyrenia, six in Morphou and 14 in İskele.

During traffic inspections carried out nationwide over the same period, police checked 22,364 drivers and reported 3,997 drivers for traffic offences.

BREAKDOWN OF TRAFFIC OFFENCES

The offences recorded were:

  • Speeding: 1,663
  • Dangerous driving: 25
  • Careless driving: 30
  • Driving without a road licence: 407
  • Driving without a licence: 15
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol: 67
  • Using a mobile phone while driving: 23
  • Driving without wearing a seat belt: 99
  • Failing to comply with traffic signs and markings: 128
  • Failing to obey traffic lights: 187
  • Driving an uninspected vehicle: 136
  • Driving an uninsured or inadequately insured vehicle: 106
  • Operating a passenger vehicle without a “T” operating permit: 20
  • Operating a private goods vehicle without a “B” operating permit: 3
  • Using window tint that obstructs visibility: 41
  • Riding a motorcycle without a protective helmet: 10
  • Failing to comply with lighting regulations or driving with inadequate lighting: 40
  • Other traffic offences: 997

Police said 234 vehicles were taken off the road and 11 drivers were arrested.
