Toros described the call as “unacceptable and deeply disappointing.”

He said diplomatic missions had not only the right but also the responsibility to hear the views of both sides as part of the UN Secretary-General’s efforts to restart the Cyprus settlement process with a results-oriented approach.

“Attempts to prevent this are not constructive and are incompatible with a spirit of dialogue, confidence-building measures and renewed UN-led efforts,” Toros said.

He stressed that, following the UN Secretary-General’s recent direct involvement in the process and at a time when efforts were underway to create conditions conducive to meaningful negotiations, communication channels should be expanded and multilateral dialogue with all relevant parties further developed.

“The Cyprus problem, which has continued for decades, can only be resolved through political courage, mutual respect and a genuine commitment to a negotiated comprehensive settlement consistent with the agreed UN framework,” Toros said.

“Genuine commitment to the settlement process requires effective diplomacy and dialogue with all international actors, alongside dialogue between the two Cypriot leaders.”
