Flight Safety Group Claims Turkish Military Aircraft Breach Nicosia FIR
The Flight Safety Foundation-Southeast Europe-Cyprus (FSF-SE-Europe-Cyprus) has claimed that Turkish military aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have violated the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR) without the required air traffic control coordination.
The aviation safety organisation said it was concerned that such activities posed risks to flight safety and increased the workload of air traffic controllers.
According to Haravgi, the organisation condemned what it described as violations by Turkey and claimed that the activities created risks for civil aviation safety.
Activities Reportedly Near Major Air Corridors
The organisation claimed that the activities were carried out particularly close to critical air corridors and the approach areas of Larnaca and Paphos airports, arguing that this made the issue especially significant.
It further alleged that such movements increased operational risks and placed an unnecessary additional burden on air traffic controllers.
The statement argued that the reported activities were incompatible with the principles and procedures governing the safe and coordinated management of international civil aviation.
The organisation also said it had expressed its support for air traffic controllers, as well as operational and technical personnel working at the Nicosia Area Control Centre and the control units at Larnaca and Paphos airports.
