Kişi: We Will Not Let Anyone Responsible Escape Accountability
CTP Secretary-General Mehmet Kale Kişi said the priority on the fourth day of the maritime disaster off Kyrenia, in which eight people lost their lives, was to support grieving families, locate those still missing and ensure families receive accurate information.
“We will not let anyone who bears responsibility escape accountability,” Kişi said.
Kişi issued a statement on the maritime disaster off Kyrenia, saying they were now on the fourth day of the tragedy.
He said the immediate priorities were the grieving families, locating the missing and ensuring that families had access to accurate information.
Kişi stressed that this did not mean the full circumstances of the disaster would not be investigated. He said the vessel’s licensing and inspection procedures, as well as the responsibilities of the captain, the company and the administration, would be examined in detail from both technical and legal perspectives.
He said criminal, civil, administrative and political responsibility could not be considered separately and that all forms of responsibility needed to be addressed in connection with one another.
Kişi said CTP would follow the process through to the end, stressing that no one responsible for the disaster, including those holding political office, would be allowed to evade accountability.
He said the party was closely monitoring judicial proceedings and court hearings and examining the details of legal responsibility. Kişi added that they were holding extensive consultations with maritime experts in an effort to find scientific and technical answers to the questions in the public’s mind.
Kişi said all available mechanisms, including Parliament’s investigative and inquiry powers and administrative procedures, would be used.
“Our aim is to uncover the truth and ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” he said.
Concluding his statement with a message of solidarity, Kişi said, “Today is once again a day of solidarity. We stand with the families. We will pursue accountability.”
