Speaking to BRT, Arıklı said his responsibilities within the government had now come to an end, adding that he had taken a step he should have taken 18 months ago but had not.

Pointing to the upcoming elections, Arıklı said the party would now be able to prepare for the process more comfortably. He acknowledged that going into the election in this way would be difficult and disadvantageous for YDP, but said it was not appropriate to discuss such issues while families were still waiting for the remains of those who died in the Filo Jet disaster.

Asked about footage showing him smiling during YDP’s withdrawal announcement, Arıklı said, “Body language is important in politics.”

He added: “Most of those criticising me are criticising me while getting drunk in taverns.” Arıklı described such criticism as “the ugly side of politics.”
