Filo Jet Second Captain Says Decision to Sail Was Captain’s Initiative
The testimony of Filo Jet’s second captain, Merve Nur Seraslan, has emerged as part of the ongoing judicial proceedings into the ferry disaster off Kyrenia.
Seraslan told the Kyrenia District Court that Taşucu Port in Mersin had been closed due to a storm on the day of the accident. She said the decision to sail was taken on the initiative of the captain, Mustafa Öz.
According to her testimony, Seraslan had told the captain, “Let’s not sail,” and informed him that the vessel had an engine malfunction and had previously taken on water.
The ferry, which was travelling from Kyrenia to Taşucu, capsized and sank off Kyrenia on August 30.
Mustafa Öz, who was detained during the initial stage of the investigation, had previously told the court that there had been no problem with departing based on the available meteorological data.
The detention periods of the suspects, including the captain, second captain and other crew members and company personnel, were extended by a further eight days at the police’s request.
New testimonies and a police report on the accident were presented to the court during the latest hearing.
