Turkey Slams European Parliament Over Cyprus Claims
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry has strongly criticised the European Parliament (EP) Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality for recommending funding in the EU’s 2027 budget for a monument allegedly intended to target the Turkish Armed Forces.
In a written statement, the ministry said it had learned that the committee had recommended allocating funds for what it described as a purported monument to be constructed by the Republic of Cyprus with the aim of making defamatory claims against the Turkish Armed Forces.
The ministry said the Turkish Armed Forces’ 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation had prevented the destruction of the Turkish Cypriot people and brought peace to the island that had lasted for more than half a century.
“The claims put forward by the Greek Cypriot side distort and politicise historical facts,” the statement said.
It added that EU institutions’ involvement in what it described as Greek Cypriot propaganda, rather than contributing to a solution to the Cyprus issue, further undermined trust between the two communities by moving away from the principles of impartiality and justice.
The ministry called on EU officials not to become instruments of groups seeking to distance Turkey from the EU through their actions.
