Savaşan was responding to remarks by YDP Secretary General Erşah Sabit Yılmaz, who accused political circles of trying to hold Arıklı and YDP responsible for the disaster and turn the tragedy into a political dispute.
Savaşan said the YDP’s statements were “unfounded and misleading”, stressing that Prime Minister Ünal Üstel had handled the process sensitively as head of the executive following the disaster.
“Official Statements Were to Be Made by the Crisis Desk”
Savaşan said Üstel had restricted statements by all officials following public outrage over Arıklı’s initial remarks after the accident, and had announced that official statements would be issued by the crisis desk.
He also said no request had been submitted to Üstel for Arıklı’s resignation as minister.
“Statements concerning leaving the government, changes in institutional management and the lifting of parliamentary immunity were announced to the public through the official accounts of YDP and Mr Arıklı themselves,” Savaşan said.
“YDP Should Not Shift Responsibility”
Savaşan said it was wrong to try to influence public perception through claims of an “operation to manipulate perceptions”.
“No one should shift responsibility for their own statements and political positions onto others,” he said.
Savaşan stressed that fully investigating the disaster and uncovering the facts was a shared responsibility, adding that political disputes should be avoided and the public should be provided with accurate information throughout the process.
