Üstel: DNA Testing to Be Used to Identify Victims
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said DNA testing would be used, alongside visual identification and other methods, to establish the identities of bodies recovered from the maritime disaster off Kyrenia with certainty. Üstel said DNA samples from relatives of those still missing began being collected.
Following the maritime disaster off Kyrenia, underwater search and recovery efforts to locate the missing people are continuing without interruption, Üstel said.
He said DNA testing would be used alongside visual identification and other identification methods to ensure that any bodies recovered were identified accurately and without any doubt.
“Accordingly, the Ministry of Health began collecting DNA samples from relatives of those missing today. The samples will be used in the identification process for bodies that are recovered,” Üstel said.
“Our aim is to establish the identity of each of our people through scientific and conclusive evidence and provide families with accurate information,” he added.
Üstel thanked the families of those missing for their understanding and cooperation despite the immense pain they were experiencing.
“The state will continue its efforts with all available resources to locate our missing people and carry out the identification process in the most reliable manner,” he said.
