Crime Round-Up: 20-Year-Old Seriously Injured in Nicosia Attempted Murder
A 20-year-old man was seriously injured after allegedly being caused to fall from a height of approximately 9.5 metres in Nicosia during a dispute over a debt. Police also seized cannabis, cocaine and large amounts of cash in separate drug operations in Famagusta and İskele.
Police have launched investigations into attempted murder, drug possession, serious assault, criminal damage and drunkenness following a series of incidents across the country over the past two days.
Attempted murder in Nicosia
At around 11.30pm on September 5, a dispute broke out at an apartment in Nicosia over an outstanding debt.
Police said F.O.N.O. (M-26) and A.M.O.A.Q. (M-23) allegedly caused Zeka Çocuk (M-20) to fall approximately 9.5 metres from a window to the ground with the intention of killing him.
Çocuk, who was seriously injured in the incident, was treated at Nicosia Dr Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital and placed under observation in the oncology intensive care unit.
The two suspects were arrested. The investigation is continuing.
Drug operation in Famagusta
On September 6, officers from the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Directorate searched the residence where F.T. (F-21) was staying in Famagusta.
Police found approximately five grams of a substance believed to be cannabis, along with a grinder believed to contain cannabis residue.
F.T. was arrested and the investigation is continuing.
Drugs and large amount of cash seized in İskele
At around 11.50pm on September 5, officers from the Crime Prevention Branch of the İskele Police Directorate, while conducting patrols at a residential complex in İskele, searched a vehicle driven by Y.Y. (M-21) and the suspect himself.
The search uncovered approximately 27 grams of cannabis and 20 grams of cocaine, as well as TL27,700 and £8,400 in cash, which police believe were proceeds from drug sales.
The drugs and cash were seized as evidence. Y.Y. and M.A.Ş. (M-21), who was a passenger in the vehicle, were arrested.
The investigation is continuing.
Serious assault in Nicosia
At around 12.30am on September 6, M.C.B. punched M.Y.K. (M-20) in the face following an argument in the car park of a supermarket in Nicosia.
M.C.B. seriously assaulted M.Y.K., causing a fracture to his cheekbone.
M.C.B. was arrested and the investigation is continuing.
Pedestrian crossing dispute in Kyrenia ends in assault
At around 10.30am on September 5, an incident occurred on Iskenderun Street in Kyrenia when H.A. (M-55) slapped R.B. (M-81) in the face after allegedly accusing him of crossing the pedestrian crossing too slowly.
H.A. seriously assaulted R.B. and also caused his glasses to fall to the ground and break.
H.A. was arrested and the investigation is continuing.
Two arrested for drunkenness and causing disturbance
Two separate incidents involving drunkenness and causing a disturbance occurred in public places in İskele and Famagusta on September 5 and 6.
H.Ö. (M-47) in İskele and I.O.T. (M-27) in Famagusta were found to have blood alcohol levels of 287 and 346 milligrams respectively and allegedly caused a disturbance by shouting loudly in public without reasonable excuse.
Both suspects were arrested at the scene. The investigations are continuing.
